Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Donations FAQs
What is HopeStream Foundation crypto philanthropy journey?
HopeStream Foundation was the first iNGO (international Non-Governmental Organization) to accept a bitcoin donation in 2013 in response to Typhoon Haiyan which struck Southeast Asia and devastated the Philippines. Around the world children are being robbed of their futures by a global economy built on inequality and greed. With your continued support, HopeStream Foundation believes that blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies can be a force for good and a force for financial inclusion.

Is my cryptocurrency charitable donation tax deductible?
Your cryptocurrency donation may be tax-deductible*.
In the U.S. and several other countries, donating non-cash assets like crypto and stock to qualified charities can have significant tax benefits. Donated crypto and stocks generally aren’t subject to capital gains tax, which can be as high as 20%, according to The Giving Block.
According to Fidelity, "when you donate cryptocurrency directly to charity, you can potentially eliminate capital gains tax liability on the contributed asset. The donor also generally has the secondary benefit of a tax deduction for the fair market value of the asset."
For donors in the United States, the IRS has classified bitcoin as property for tax purposes. This means that when you donate bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit such as HopeStream Foundation, you may be exempt form capital gains tax on that transaction, and you can receive a tax receipt if you provide your email address.
*Depends on your country's tax laws. Please consult a qualified tax advisor.
What happens to my cryptocurrency once it is donated to Save the Children?
HopeStream Foundation US accepts cryptocurrency donations directly through our crypto donation page, powered by Gemini and The Giving Block. Donations are immediately sold and converted to US Dollars. We do this so that we can operationalize your donations to have immediate impact for the families and children we serve.
Can you donate cryptocurrency to HopeStream Foundation from outside the United States?
Yes, cryptocurrency can be donated to HopeStream Foundation from anywhere around the world, with the exception that HopeStream Foundation do not currently accept donations from individuals located in OFAC sanctioned countries due to US regulations.
